Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions about Academy Soccer

What is the difference between Recreational soccer and Academy soccer?

Recreational soccer is focused on just having fun.  Volunteer coaches, limited commitment, and like competition create the best environment for enjoying the game.  The Academy is the transition to competitive soccer and prepares players for that transition.  Paid coaches, more expectations, and a competitive environment are all included in this program.  The Academy is for more advanced players or those looking to become more advanced.

What is the difference between Academy and Competitive soccer?

The Academy does not hold annual tryouts and the focus is on development.  Teams primarily play in house and do not travel as much.  There is also not a focus on State tournaments, regional events, etc.    The cost is also significantly lower than Competitive soccer.  Academy serves as the bridge from Recreational to Competitive soccer.

When should I register?

You want to register as early as you can.  The program is a year round program, but new players can be added at any time.  Contact the coach for your age group for more information.  During the summer or prior to the fall season would be the best time to register.  However, players do register in early spring.

Can I play Recreational Soccer and Academy Soccer?

Unique situations may allow players to play Academy Soccer and remain on their recreational teams.  These rare situations will require approval from the DOC and all coaches involved must be aware of the intent of the player’s decision to play both.  (Recreational and Academy coach included)  We would encourage players not to do both as conflicts will arise with training and game schedules.  Players that participate in both programs will be required to register for both programs.

If I choose to play Academy, can I play with my friends?

Recreational teams and friends typically join the Academy together.  However, in the Academy players are divided by their current skill level.  It is possible to be in the same age group, but on different teams.  This does not mean players will not practice or play games together.  We do our best to meet everyone’s expectations when possible.

Do I have to play Academy to play Competitive soccer in the future?

No.  However, you will have an advantage over players that did not play in the Academy Program.  With the program only being offered at U8-U10, you should take advantage of the short window if you intend to play competitive soccer.

Why does our Academy team have more/less games than another Academy teams?

Our Academy schedule is based on the best match ups within SLSC.  All teams will have a minimum of 8 games per season.  Some teams will match up better with more teams within the program.  The staff and your coach spend a lot of time and effort in creating the best possible schedule for your team.  The needs and ability of each team do have an impact on the overall schedule.

Is the commitment more than Recreational Soccer?  How often do we practice?

Academy teams typically train twice a week for 1.5 hours.  This should be comparable to Recreational soccer.  The main difference would be the environment created for these sessions.  An experienced coach that has the background and credentials for coaching is crucial.  Players of similar ability challenges the players and creates the best learning environment.  Training at the same facility as the other Academy and Competitive teams also foster the best overall environment.  Players can see the next level on the field next to them.

Is the Academy expensive to participate in?

In comparison to other activities available to the youth, it isn’t expensive.  The cost is illustrated on our site under the program info.  For more specific questions you can contact your coach or the coach in your age group.
